Our Foundation
AREA was established in December 1993 as the continuation of the GTZ DESP project.
AREA was established in December 1993 as the continuation of the GTZ DESP project. AREA is a non-governmental, non-political, not-for-profit developmental organization.
AREA works to empower Afghan communities through sustainable rehabilitation, development and humanitarian interventions. We foster social inclusion, gender equity and grassroots empowerment across the country.
AREA currently works in demining, agriculture, skills and vocational training, environment protection, community development and energy efficiency.

Key Achievements
Demonstrating our commitment to sustainable change.
People trained in Mine and Explosive Remnant of War (ERW) Risk Education by trained Afghan deminers accredited by DMAC and UNMAS.
Humanitarian mine clearance and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education projects completed, linking community based demining with AREA's development interventions.
Support for farming, horticulture, improved seed distribution, animal husbandry, irrigation systems, cooperatives and crop development across Kabul, Logar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Kunduz, Samangan, Mazar, Herat and Badghis.
Grassroots level institutions established and strengthened at community, village and Gozar level through direct community participation.
Solar cookers, solar water heaters, photovoltaic modules, wind pumps and biogas systems planned, designed, developed and promoted to reduce pressure on non-renewable energy sources.
Vocational and business development training delivered through AREA centres in Kunar, Nangarhar, Kabul and Herat in carpentry, masonry, metal work, shoemaking, tailoring, plumbing, English and computer skills.
